Jackson Dean can drive his voice to its gravelly extreme or soften it to a deep smoother tone. Either way, it is his strong and rich vocals which are the dominant feature of this album. He is a country blues and soul man. He sounds like he has lived a lot longer than he has. Thirteen tracks is a lot of songs to keep up a mood and theme which is decidedly heavy. Having said that, Dean does manage to maintain the feeling. With every song, I keep imagining him riding across the desert or into a tumbleweed town on a black horse. He dips his hat to the ladies and shoots it out with the bad guys. This character has a past and lives life on the edge – he doesn’t think that there are a lot of years ahead. That’s the feel I get for these songs and the atmosphere that they create. He is on a search for answers with these songs. He is like a cowboy version of Cobain. There’s a bit of country grunge there too. This is a powerful album. A lot of the songs are open to interpretation. The opening song, Big Blue Sky is probably the lightest track on the album but it does open the album well. It is a rich, hopeful song. The songs after that are darker, more complicated and work on many levels. The songs that follow are grittier, driven by wild guitars and percussion or varied vocal gymnastics. He borders on Springsteen, Stapleton, Waylon. It is not a hearts and flowers album it is more flesh and bone (a line from talkin’ to backroads. ) He is years beyond his years.
