The most successful film of 1958 in Japan was Chushingura: The Loyal 47 Ronin, a sprawling epic from director Kunio Watanabe following the true story of a group of samurai warriors in the early 1700s. After lord Asano Naganori assaults court official Kira Yoshinaka, he is forced to commit seppuku (suicide). His samurai warriors are left without a leader and carefully plan their revenge on Yoshinaka, building to a daring assault on his estate. Starring Kazuo Hasegawa (An Actor's Revenge), Shintaro Katsu (The Tale of Zatoichi), Koji Tsuruta (Big Time Gambling Boss), Raizo Ichikawa (The Betrayal), Yataro Kurokawa (Gate of Hell), and Michiyo Kogure (Drunken Angel), this is a must-see samurai legend, produced by Masaichi Nagata (Ugetsu). 1500 copies only.
