A solo album of Mehldau's own compositions, centred on two extended works: 'Fantasy for Piano', originally commissioned by Jeremy Denk and written in the same period as his 'Three Pieces after Bach', and 'Fourteen Reveries', a collection of shorter pieces comparable in structure to his 'Suite: April 2020'. 'Fantasy for Piano' shares the formal preoccupations of 'Three Pieces After Bach', built around long pedal-points, sharp juxtapositions between triadic consonance and extreme dissonance, and a freely subdivided 7/4 meter, all within a dense texture from which the melodic line must emerge. 'Fourteen Reveries' takes the opposite approach, eschewing larger-scale development in favour of brevity, each piece a distillation of emotion accompanying moments of withdrawal from the exterior world, expressing solitude in turns enraptured, placid, nervous, lonely or ecstatic.
